| Notes for Archibald Graham | ||||||||||
| Archibald Graham received a land patent in
Augusta County, Virginia in 1749, for 280 acres on a branch
of Buffalo Creek adjoining Christian Rutlickberger.298 He may also have
received an earlier laand patent for 148 acres on Buffalo
Creek on 28 September 1745, which he then sold in 1747 to
James Rentfroe.299, Vol.
3, page 259 In 1753 in that same county he was
ordered to work on a road crew with others including a
William Graham (probably not his son, who would have been
just a boy at the time).299, Augusta County Court Records,
Order Book No. IV, page 61 In 1758 also in
Augusta County, he was named as one of many who owed money
to the estate of Col. James Patton, the note dating from 18
December 1753.299, Vol
3, page 75. Abstracts of Wills of Augusta County, Virginia,
Augusta County Court, Will Book No. 3 By 1767, Archibald and his wife Margaret were living in Pittsylvania County, Virginia300, and that same year they sold the original 280 acres in Augusta County as well as an additional 148 acres on a hill near Buffalo Creek299, Vol 3, page 466. Deed Book No. 14. Both lots were purchased by Israel Christian.299 According to the tax list for Pittsylvania County, Archibald had at least one slave named Robin who was over 16300. A William Graham is also noted on the tax list300, but it is unknown whether this was the William Graham from Augusta County ( a brother, perhaps) or if this was Archibald's son William who would have been in his twenties by that time. He wrote his will some five years before his death. |
